Fireplace Remote Controls: A Convenient Upgrade for Your Hearth

Whether you have an existing gas or electric fireplace or you're buying a new one, adding a remote control is a smart and easy way to make it more convenient to use. Being able to turn your fireplace on and off, modulate flames or adjust temperatures from the comfort of your couch makes a new or replacement remote for a fireplace an excellent investment. Because of their utility and popularity, there are a wide variety of fireplace remotes on the market, which can make it a challenge to find the right model for your needs.

Fireplaces Direct is here to make it easier. We've combed the market for the best fireplace remotes out there, ensuring that every item you see in our inventory can be relied on to provide excellent service for many years. In addition, our product expertise ensures we can find you a remote compatible with almost any fireplace on the market. To help you along the way, we've collected some helpful tips below.

Types of Fireplace Remote Control

The primary concern when purchasing a fireplace remote replacement or a new remote is ensuring that the remote will be compatible with your fireplace. There's no such thing as a true "universal fireplace remote" on the market because each type of remote is designed to work with a specific subset of models, designs and valve types. It's also generally not possible to find a replacement electric fireplace remote at all because each electric model will have a specific remote designed only for that type of fireplace. The gas fireplace remotes and related products we carry can be broken down into nine categories:
  • On & Off Remotes - The simplest type of gas fireplace remote, these units can only turn the flame on and off, as the name suggests. Generally, these remotes are designed for use with fireplaces with a millivolt valve and will include a remote and receiver box.
  • Thermostats - Thermostat-style remotes allow you to directly control the temperature of the room the fireplace is in. They'll usually have an LCD screen to monitor current and target temps and will also include a receiver box. This style of remote is also intended for millivolt valve designs.
  • Timer Remotes - Timer remotes have the ability to put your fireplace on a countdown to shut off at a certain time. Many timer remotes also provide thermostat functionality.
  • Programmable Thermostats - These are a step up from a basic thermostat remote, allowing greater control. Similar to a home furnace thermostat, they allow you to set the fireplace to a schedule for hands-off convenience.
  • Modulating Flame Remotes - If your fireplace features a servo motor gas valve, you may be able to use a remote of this type to exercise precise control over the flame height. Servo valves use electric current to hold the valve at a certain setting, allowing you to modulate the amount of natural gas or propane being used at any given time.
  • Wall Mount Controls - If you'd like to keep your fireplace controls on the wall rather than in your hand, this is the way to go. Available in a variety of styles, they can also be used in conjunction with a portable remote for added convenience.
  • Specialty Remotes - If your fireplace has very specific requirements, you may need to shop in this section to find what you're looking for.
  • Smart Home Devices - For homeowners looking to integrate their fireplace into a modern home assistant suite like Alexa, Google Home or other Bluetooth/Wi-Fi solutions, this is the place to look. With the right set of products, you'll be controlling your fire feature from your phone or via voice command with ease.
  • Accessories - These products are designed to upgrade your remote system in some way. Popular choices include covers to conceal the receiver box, additional power adaptors and wall brackets to keep the remote when not in use.

Fireplace Remote Control FAQs

  • Can I use a remote control with my fireplace? Probably, but the answer will depend on what type of gas valve your fireplace has. We carry remotes for millivolt valves, servo motor valves and latching solenoid valves. Refer to your owner's manual to determine valve type.
  • Can I get a remote for my electric fireplace? Unfortunately, it's not really possible to buy a universal electric fireplace remote. If you're looking to replace an existing remote, it might be possible to get one from the manufacturer, but that's not guaranteed either.
  • Why isn't my fireplace remote working? A nonfunctional fireplace remote could be caused by any of the following: dead batteries, incorrect programming, broken electronics or blocked signal.
